In the 1990s, Carrix formed a software team to build what they could not buy, a software system that would give its operations a strategic advantage. Since then, Carrix has grown into a significant multinational shipping entity; and that software team, Tideworks, is now a global technology brand with extensive expertise in cargo transportation operations.

A Brief History of Tideworks Technology

January 1999 – Tideworks Technology is launched

SSA Marine launched Tideworks Technology to provide terminal operations software. With an established base of systems in place, Tideworks is already one of the largest providers of IT to port operations worldwide.

October 2002 – Tideworks opens Training Center in Panama

In a joint effort with Manzanillo International Terminal, Tideworks opens the Training Center of Americas in Colon, Panama. The training center provides Tideworks customers with technical and operational training for Tideworks terminal operating system solutions.

June 2003 – Forecast web portal is introduced

Tideworks introduces Forecast, the industry’s most comprehensive online tracking tool for terminal operators worldwide.

July 2004 – Tideworks Netherlands acquires Sonu Software Solutions

Sonu provides technology products and services to marine terminals in Europe. The acquisition will strengthen the introduction of Tideworks products and services in Europe. Tideworks plans to support the expansion of existing Sonu products in Europe and will offer Sonu products in the United States and Latin America.

May 2008 – Terminal View is announced

Terminal View is a 3D visualization tool that enables port and intermodal operators to zoom into any area of their terminal and monitor operations in real-time through an intuitive and extremely rich user interface.

March 2010 – Intermodal PRO TOS is released

Tideworks introduces a comprehensive terminal operating system for intermodal terminals. Intermodal Pro includes highly intuitive graphical tools and flexible user-driven reporting that eliminates the guesswork from intermodal terminal operations, enables more efficient loading and unloading of trains, and boosts productivity while reducing operational costs.

November 2010 – Mainsail Vanguard is introduced

Tideworks announces the next generation TOS, Mainsail Vanguard. Mainsail Vanguard addresses productivity challenges in terminal operations by utilizing the latest technology to help users find information faster and more easily without the need for custom development.

March 2012 – Advent and eModal merge

Advent, Inc. and eModal, two long-time competitors, merge to form Advent Intermodal Solutions. The combined organization will offer customers its powerful suite of existing intermodal logistics software, as well as the flexibility and experience to provide custom, purpose-built solutions.

December 2014 – Live at 100 sites

One hundred rail and marine terminals spanning 22 countries and four continents globally have gone live with Tideworks terminal operations systems to achieve peak operational efficiency. Tideworks 100th site to go live was CSX Intermodal’s Valleyfield terminal in Quebec, Canada.

June 2015 – Tideworks integrates with automatic stacking cranes at MIT

In order to leverage the abilities of MIT’s ASCs, Tideworks delivered several new automation and optimization features within its Spinnaker® and Traffic Control™ systems. Additionally, Tideworks worked with ABB, the ASC drive control system provider, to meet extensive integration requirements.

June 2017 – Tideworks Insight data platform announced

The real-time and historical data platform is now in operation at Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT) in Panama. Tideworks Insight allows users to tap into the databases of Tideworks products, including Mainsail Vanguard®, Traffic Control™, Spinnaker Planning Management System®, and others, to obtain a 360-degree view of their operations. Additionally, terminal operators have the ability to connect systems beyond the TOS in order to gain enterprise data on a holistic terminal level.

July 2017 – Tideworks announces Thomas J. Rucker as President

Thomas J. Rucker succeeds the retiring President Michael Schwank, who led the company for 19 years.

August 2019 – Tideworks and Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. enter a cooperation agreement

This is Tideworks’ first cooperation with an equipment manufacturer and demonstrates a progression of its efforts to provide the global supply chain with next-generation TOS solutions and innovative options that include both software and hardware in a harmonized approach. The cooperation will allow terminal operators to leverage tightly integrated TOS and lifting equipment in future offerings.

November 2019 – The Intermodal Division is established

Tideworks creates a dedicated intermodal division located in Jacksonville, Florida, to enable Tideworks to dedicate resources to continue investing in the research and development of new products and services for the global rail industry.

June 2020 – Tideworks and Brenock form a joint venture

Through the joint venture, Brenock and Tideworks — with the support of Tideworks’ parent company, Carrix, and sister company, SSA Marine — will deliver solutions to help the cruise line community optimize and automate processes as they rebuild from economic setbacks and adjust to new health and safety standards on board.

August 2020 – Mainsail 10 is released

Tideworks introduces its new marine TOS solution, Mainsail 10, and goes live with the first deployment at Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT). The new solution provides rapid access to and management of real-time data to improve decision-making and increase cargo flow through the terminal while also reducing costs. The new TOS is highly configurable and customizable – allowing terminal operators to create individualized user experiences and powerful ad-hoc reports that meet their specific needs.
