Technology in intermodal terminals has advanced significantly over the past 25 years. Terminal Operating Systems (TOSs) are now widespread, enabling automated insights, predictive analytics, and even IoT-enabled smart containers.

Yet many terminals—particularly smaller ones—still struggle with fundamental data management. This can lead to poor visibility, miscommunication across teams, and a negative experience for customers unable to access accurate shipment information.

To understand this disconnect, we surveyed 107 intermodal operators worldwide, uncovering why the industry struggles to lay the groundwork for digitalisation. Mastering the basics allows operators to optimise yard usage, increase throughput, generate higher revenue, and unlock automation and AI capabilities for smarter, more efficient operations.
